Fake Hallmarks: How Marks Are Forged, and How They Are Caught

The hallmark system was designed against fraud, which means fraud against the system has a long history of its own. Knowing the three ways marks are faked is most of knowing how to catch them.

It needs saying first: genuinely forged hallmarks are rarer than anxious buyers fear. The systems were built with teeth, faking marks has been ruinously criminal for centuries, and the overwhelming majority of marked antique metal is exactly what it claims. But the frauds exist, they concentrate precisely where money concentrates, famous makers, high standards, important-looking pieces, and every collector should know the three ways marks lie and the handful of habits that catch all three.

The three frauds

Cast copies. The piece, marks and all, is moulded from a genuine original and cast. The marks arrive automatically, and automatically wrong: casting softens them. A struck punch has crisp walls and displaced metal; a cast mark has rounded edges, a slightly porous floor, and the same softness everywhere, front, back and marks alike. Under 10x, struck versus cast is a texture difference the eye learns quickly, and casting seams or sprue scars elsewhere on the piece corroborate.

Transposed marks. The oldest trick, born under the duty tax: a patch of metal carrying genuine marks is cut from a legitimate object, a spoon, a watch case, damaged plate, and soldered into a grander or newer one. The marks are real; their address is false. The tells are geographic: a faint seam boxing in the marked area, solder colour or a halo of different alloy around it, marks whose wear disagrees with the surrounding surface, and marks oddly placed for the object, a row where no office would strike it, or the wrong marks for the object type entirely. Forged punches. The rarest and most serious: steel dies cut to imitate real marks, struck onto fraudulent metal. The inspection that catches all three

And weigh coherence above any single clue. Genuine pieces occasionally show one oddity, a re-struck punch, an honest repair near the marks; fakes accumulate oddities, because every element had to be faked separately and each fake leaks.

What to do with a suspect

Name the doubt precisely, the seam, the softness, the impossible combination, and price or pass accordingly; vague unease is not an argument, but a documented inconsistency is. For significant pieces, second opinions earn their fee: assay offices and serious dealers see forgeries professionally, and a modern office can re-test metal definitively. Describe honestly if you sell, suspicions included, since passing a known suspect silently converts someone else's fraud into yours. And keep the base rate in mind: the point of these habits is not paranoia but speed, five minutes of looking that lets you trust the vast honest majority with a clear conscience, which is, after all, exactly what the marks were invented for.
